What is the accurate distance off a bench or bags that 22-250 can be counted on to consistently kill whistle pigs? I've killed them at 400 yds but it was prolly a fluke. So what distance can I count on to be accurate with the caliber when it's sighted in at 100 yds?
Opps this shouldn't be under rimfire category So lets change the caliber to 17hmr now whats the consensus
17 hmr? I dunno. don't have one. my guess would be about 200.
as for the 22-250. sight in at 200 yd and if you can hit a ground hog at any distance thereafter, you can kill it.

a 17 is good for maybe 150 yards if your a good shot they dont have enough energy to be effective much beyond 100 yards. a 22-250 os good for most people to 300 yards but can be good to 400 with practice and knowing ballistics.

Agian this is one of those times I have to ponder what the .17 is good for other than target shooting.
For squirrel, with a solid point bullet I guess it's a good shooter, but anything bigger than that it just doesn't have the umph to be something I'd want to use on say a groundhog.
Dunno, maybe I just need to buy one and get to shooting it to find out for myself.

I've been wanting a 17HMR for a long time but I think I've been convinced that a 22mag will work just as well or better for the short distance and 222,223, 22-250, 243 covers the farthest distance I can shoot with any reliability.
