View Full Version : Internal locks on guns

Apparently lots of folks don't like internal locks on guns, so I'm going to ask the question.....
Why don't you like them if you don't use them?
I've got a bunch of "keys" for the silly things, but I never use them, and have no intention of using them, so I don't care that they are there.
Tell me why I should care?
I know it's just additional mechanisms in the guts of a gun that can go wrong, and I haven't looked at how they actually work, so I don't know if it makes any diference at all or not.

Wish I had an answer but I never paid any attention to them. In fact I think only the Bersa has one. I know Luv's hates his Bersa cuz it has one and I'm waiting for him to put it up for sale. :)

I've got keys for a remington, a taurus, a ruger, a savage, and I think the marlin has one too.
Tell me why I should care?
you shouldn't.
they don't matter unless you think a new gun is worth less than the same old model without one.
they don't lock themselves.
but you might lock the gun if you have a reason too.

It's not so much the locks, it's the infringement on my rights. There is always the possibility of a malfunction in the lock causing the death of an innocent person too. Or, being the good father, you lock your gun only to have an intruder not wait for you to unlock your gun and kills your whole family.
It all boils down to people taking responsibility for their actions and not the gun manufacturers doing it because the general public isn't smart enough to do it themselves.

I certainly can't, and won't argue against these points, cause I'm with you on that.

At least one in every crowd!
And then there's this place where we're lucky to have so damn many!

And then there is all this waste paper stuck to the trigger of the Bersa, like the illegal aliens are going to need it translated for them.

Besides failing internally, they work by being turned, so it is not impossible to change states with vibration.

S&W forums say there are rare failures. I choose revolvers cause I don't accept the seldom failures of semi autos.

Isn't just one failure too many on something like a gun lock?

External locks have been around for years. Why do they need internal locks?

That's just it, if someone feels safer using an external lock that is not integrated into the gun, that should be their choice. Internal locks should be something that never was invented and would also help to keep the price down for the majority of the people that think locks serve no useful purpose other than to keep honest people honest.
I just really don't understand the consternation.
if you see a gun with an internal gun lock...
and you don't want an internal lock...
hellsbells! just don't buy it!

I always worry about losing the key too. With an external lock I can cut it off.
Internal locks are stupid, I believe I have stated that before. If a responsible person wants to lock his/her gun up then they will do it. Ruining the look of your firearm and introducing a possible point of failure will not make the owner more responsible.

I don't think it was what was originally meant by Locked and loaded.
As far as I am concerned locked and empty guns are worthless.
That is unless you can get perpetrators to make an appointment ahead of time.

The gun manufacturers know that. They were simply appeasing a bunch of ignorant politicians.

My thoughts are that it's up to me whether i want to use the internal lock or not and I choose not to.
But think of the # of guns stolen every year from people who are not familiar with firearms, or just bought one for home protection and don't own a safe and have kids around. Whats the difference in having the ammo seperated from the gun or having the gun locked in the event of a home invasion?
Plus I think it's great that even if some kids break in and grab a gun or two and find out it's useless cuz it's lock is priceless. Remember it's not an educated gun smith thats going to do a B&E.

Why can't it be an option or model, for the owner to choose? If they had one or two models with it, they would probably sell a few. Enough to keep making it at a profit, dunno. But obviously it is not something the market wants. No one else is jumping on the idea.

WHY? check the internal lock. make sure it is unlocked. throw away the key. problem solved.

Truth is, I have no idea if any of them even work because I've never used one of the keys and have never locked a gun with one of the keys.
Maybe there really aren't any internal locks at all, maybe they just say there is so the politicians think there are and all is good?
Howinthehell would anyone in government know the difference?

Because the democrats secretly have guns in their homes, even though they are pro gun control in public.
That is one of the worse ideas I have heard yet.

You have a lock on your gun. I would write what the key is for and put it away. If it were to accidently lock you would need the key, or it is possible you would need it for some internal work or cleaning.
Can the lock be removed with the key? If so, then I guess it doesn't matter. But I would file it away.

The only thing I would lock and throw away the key for are on rapists, child molesters, murderers and Sarah Brady.
