I had to go to a funeral today, for an old friend, and neighbor that we grew up with many moons ago.
He and his father were part of our hunting group that made an annual trip north to a nice 305 acre patch of ground where we
spent a good bit of time chasing after whitetails, turkeys and bear on occasion.
His ashes will be spread at his ground blind on the mountain that he hunted for 30 years.
It's a 3 hour ride and then an hour hike to the top of the mountain. there will be a group of us, my brother and I and some family members.
It is a very fitting goodbye to an old friend who loved the outdoors.
Tommorow will be agood day.

I am very sorry to hear of your loss. That sounds like exactly what I would want too. I wish you and everyone else the best. Doing this for him is like shaking his hand and saying goodbye one more time.

Not trying to make a comparision. On of our dogs died last week, a bird dog. I'll be taking some of his ashes up to camp. Just bought it this fall, was glad I got it in time.

In death I want to become part of the nature that I enjoy so much during my life.

We've got one of our buried upstate where we will live. Did it one night after he died. We were digging a hole at midnight in the pouring rain.
He blongs there since he loved going there. So yup, I understand.

Yup, I don't want a patch of ground in a bone yard, I want to make a mighty oak grow some more character.

Unless I can become a zombie and chase deer after death.

Sorry to hear Dave, but he is going to where he wanted to be. At least his wish was granted.

It was a hard, but very good day.
His two daughters are special people, who were completely appreciative of us taking them there to his "spot."
It is a memory that will last the rest of our days for my brother and I.

Good that it was done, and I imagine good that it is done with.

Yes.
I do know we'll be taking his daughters back at some point, they didn't want to leave.

Got a phone call yesterday informing me that this guys father has now passed away.
My brother went to see him Friday to give him the report on our hunt up north. Saturday morning he was gone.
He asked if his stand was still there on the mountain, just above his son's stand........
We may be taking another trip north to bring father and son together for the final time.
Best part of all of this is the fact that the 3 buck that were shot between 4 of us were all right at the sons stand where his ashes are buried now.
It's going to be another bittersweet week.
Very sorry to hear of your losses. May they rest in peace.

Sorry for the loss Dave. I don't go to cemetery's and talk to the dead much, but occasionally I stop by and talk to the old man that taught me how to hunt. He was no relation but he took a snot nosed kid and spent a lot of time with him. He's been gone for 35 years now but every fall he remembered.....
wow. there is obviously a lot of love for these guys.
I am sorry I missed this thread first time around.
