What is the smallest caliber you trust to protect yourself? The best answer: My personal favorite defense gun has always been a Beretta Jetfire in 22 short. I have carried it for many years including while hiking. I never leave without it in my pocket. Of course the first rule when hiking in the wilderness is to use the "Buddy System". This it means you NEVER hike alone, you bring a friend, companion, or family member because if something happens there is someone to go get help. I remember one time while hiking with my girlfriend in northern Alberta out of nowhere came this huge brown bear charging us and was she mad. We must have been near one of her cubs. Anyway, if I had not had my little Jetfire I would not be here today. Just one shot to my girlfriend’s knee cap was all it took . . . . . the bear got her and I was able to escape by just walking at a brisk pace. That's one of the best pistols in my collection...

Just so glad that worked out for you, so many times it's the woman that carries the .22.

So with every bear attack comes the search for a new gal. That could be expensive.

After the 3rd or fourth one, the DA, might start asking questions.

I have been reading on this abit. I have never been afaird of bears or wolves in the woods. But I have been running the dogs, at new place I bought, and worry if they got into it with something.

.44 mags are people in the internet arguements, and of course bigger ones get mentioned. .45 colt is also mentioned. I already have .357 and .44spcl, which is there the debate really gets going. Seems to edge to .44spcl.

While I like any excuse to buy a new gun, they do cost money.

I walk with a limp, so I am not going out with some of you guys.

In all seriousness I do carry in the woods even when not hunting. I am not scared of anything but it pays to be prepared. When we moved out here there was a pack of aggresive dogs running around. The animal control guys came out in response to our call but did nothing. My wife had to drive out of our driveway to get the mail across the street. We ended up taking care of the problem ourselves with a variety of weapons. Still, it drives home the point that you should have something with you. I think a 357, 44, 45, or 10mm all work well. Even a 22 can protect alot better than a stick.

Yeah new guns cost money. Thats why I work though. LOL

I had a horse take me straight up a mountain in wyoming, and we slid back down on his haunches, it was the ride of my life.
Another horse was put down the week we were there because they came up on a griz with a fresh elk kill packed on the horse. The horse reared up and got an elk antler up it's
butt and ended up having to put him down because of the injuries.
Saw enough of them while hunting as well.

I have a great respect for the critters these days.

I just meant, I am not going to run out an buy it tomorrow. But I will probably end up seeing a shiny one I like and buy it. I have more then enough guns for defense and hunting. I just want more then I have.

But divorce has a way of lessening the severity of the symptoms.
